Salsa Mecca is changing the way Calgary dancers think about group classes! Instead of focusing primarily on turn-patterns, which can limit your education, we believe in teaching you all the skills and fundamentals you need to become a smoother, more natural dancer. Plus, we give you the tools required to apply those skills to your everyday dancing with some of the hottest moves and patterns around!

What's Included:

Body Movement / Isolations:
Increase the range of motion and flexibility of each body part, first by itself, then together, creating Cuban Motion. Focuses on creating a smoother, more natural movement right from your basic step, then building from there to apply it to all the moves in your repertoire. One of the most important Salsa techniques you will learn!
Leading / Following Technique:
Learn the secrets to using your natural body movement to create lead and follow, so you feel more connected with your partner. Plus, drills you can do at home to cement the "leading from your center" concept.
Spinning Technique:
Cover fundamentals on how to find your center of gravity, helping you become a faster, more balanced spinner. Includes tips for leading and following spins for your partner work.
Musicality / Styling:
Recognize the different rhythms, phrasing, and structure of Salsa music, and how to find the difference between the "1" and the "5" beats. Covers exercises on how to dance to the music, not just the beat, and options for stying your dancing to different Salsa sounds, giving your dancing a polished, finished look.

The Difference between "On 1" and "On 2" Salsa:
Although the overall timing is the same, the biggest difference between the two styles is the point in the music where the dancer "breaks", or dances the rock-step. When dancing "on 1", the dancer steps forwards or backwards on the first beat of the phrase, putting more emphasis on the strong down-beat. When dancing "on 2", the dancer would start by taking a step either on the spot, or slightly forwards or backwards, and following with a stronger step on the second beat. Both are correct, and either style may be danced to any song, but typically "on 1" fits music with a stronger down-beat, and lends itself well to many songs that have a lot of breaks, hits, or pauses. On the other hand, the "on 2" style of dancing is often preferred for smoother, groovier music, due to it's more continuous feel. Both styles are equally danced around the world, and although many dancers choose to primarily dance one or the other, it is beneficial to learn both.

private lessons

Although group classes are an inexpensive option, private lessons are undoubtedly the fastest way to improve your dancing. Working one-on-one with your instructor, we are able to create a program tailored to your specific dance needs and personal goals. Private lessons may be booked as often as you would like, however, we suggest you supplement every two to four weeks of group classes with a private lesson for best results.

Got some friends who want to learn to dance, but can't find a class that works for all your schedules? No problem! Our private group classes are tailored to your interests; you only learn the dances YOU want to learn, and you only come on the days that work for you. This is a great way to spend an evening out together, or the perfect way to get ready for an upcoming function, wedding, or office party. We teach Salsa, Merengue, Swing/Jive, Country, Ballroom, and more!
